The Craft Was the Excuse. The Stories Were the Inheritance.
My mother's family came from the Arkansas Delta—Luxora, Arkansas was part of the soil. My grandmother was born around 1890. My mother was one of six sisters and one brother. They picked cotton as children. They were sharecroppers who survived through sheer resourcefulness, endurance, and quiet elegance.
The women in my family—mother, grandmother, aunts, elderly babysitters—taught sewing, quilting, gardening, decorating, and drawing. But the technical lessons were often just the excuse. The craft lessons created an intimate space for family history, community memory, values, and traditions that would have otherwise dissolved into time.
They knew how to prune a dogwood without bruising the cambium. They knew how to coax morning glories up a wire trellis, make an acanthus leaf feel like royalty, and keep a garden alive in the suffocating heat of a Mid-South August.
Root Revival is my monument to them. I paired traditional American tattoo flash with 19th-century botanical linework, vintage pruning shears, and resilient Southern flora. Because true revival doesn't come from buying new plastic—it comes from tending your roots with care.
